The EPAL System
The European pallet market revolves around the EPAL (European Pallet Association) system, which manages over 600 million EUR pallets in circulation. The standard EUR pallet (1200 x 800 mm) is the backbone of European logistics, used in an open exchange pool that allows pallets to flow freely across supply chains and borders. EPAL licenses over 1,500 companies across Europe to manufacture and repair certified pallets.
Standards & Compliance
European pallet companies must comply with EN 13698 series standards for pallet production, and ISPM-15 requirements apply to all wood packaging materials moving to and from non-EU countries. Post-Brexit, ISPM-15 now also governs EU-UK pallet movements. Individual countries may have additional national standards and certification bodies overseeing pallet quality and phytosanitary treatment.
